Shouldn't that be 'for all intents and purposes'?

Though given the brittleness of the penny, maybe it's only the intensive purposes that are problematic.

"It" need not refer to the penny. The sentence given is one in which "intensive purposes" actually is correct.

He's surely talking about his arm.
