Only if they are built rigorously. Sloppy mortises are not particularly sound joints.

(Little known carpentry fact: the dovetail joint was introduced to American furniture-making by immigrant Italian carpenters; the name "dovetail" is a corruption of the phrase dove tale?, "where [is] such [a thing]?" -- this was the customary interjection of legendary joiner Luigi Serafini, who was notorious for misplacing his chisels.)
